I’ve been to Washington, DC several times but until recently never had the opportunity to explore Georgetown, which is a charming neighborhood in the city full of shops and restaurants.

I stared the day off with touring Tudor Place Historic House & Garden. This is a Georgetown landmark that according to their brochure, “Preserves the stories of six generations of descendants of Martha Washington, and the enslaved and free people who lived and worked” there. I highly recommend taking the mansion tour, you can purchase your tickets online. The beautiful mansion has many relics and artifacts from its past and the tour guide was very informative. The architect of Tudor Place, William Thornton, also designed the United States Capitol Building! After the tour, I headed out to the gardens.

I also had the chance to visit Dumbarton Oaks Garden, which was a walkable distance from Tudor Place. You can purchase your timed ticket online and leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens. There are 16 acres! The gardens are the vision and legacy of Robert and Mildred Bliss, who were philanthropists and art collectors. Be sure to also check out their art collection at The Museum, which is a short distance from the gardens.

After a long day of exploring Georgetown, be sure to have a special meal at Martin’s Tavern (reservations recommended.) This amazing restaurant has hosted many presidents and dignitaries. I was seated in “The Rule Seat,” where JFK sat to write his Inaugural speech! The food is delicious and there is history all around you!
